How Top Chefs Stay Slim

Now that I am counting points on Weight Watchers I am paying more attention to articles like this one. I found it on the Parade website. It has some good tips, including putting down the tasting spoon when you are cooking. Instead try dipping a leaf of lettuce or a small carrot into your sauces to taste.

26 Main Dish Salads

I'm counting points on Weight Watchers these days. (Liking the WW app on my iphone). So, I am looking at ways to get more vegetables and salads in my diet. Sunset Magazine has a feature this month on 26 ideas for main dish salads, including this Poached Salmon Nicoise, a Baby Vegetable Salad with Cornichons (and the mayonaise replaced with yogurt) and a Thai-style Jicama Salad. Yummmmmm

Change Your iPad into a Laptop

Interesting...a company has raised over $100,000 on Kickstarter for a product called Brydge, that will turn your iPad into a laptop. It will be $170 for the regular version and $210 for the Brydge with speakers. Might be worth $170 if you do not already own a laptop. Not thinking I really need it, but kind of want it...now why is that?

First Picnic of 2012

Picnics make me happy. I grew up on picnics. My grandparents lived across the street from the town's park, which had a petting zoo and a carousel. My grandmother on the spur of the moment would fry some chicken, make a coleslaw and we would all head over to the park for dinner...more...

5 Ways to Cut Your Grocery Bill (and Save the Planet)

I am really into cutting my family  grocery bill.  When our kids were still at home, way too much was in the refrigerator and way too much ended up being wasted (though I never noticed the problem with pizza and junk food). Now, I want to use every trick in the book for choosing, appreciating and using the things we eat.  This article is a good start if you are trying to clean up your food act too! more...

4 running motivation tricks for when you just want to skip it

We’ve lived in our current home for about seven years. And for every single day of those seven years, the older woman my family calls the “Energizer Bunny Lady” has raced past our house several times. She amazes me and I wonder what motivates her to run day-in-and-day-out. Another woman I know has walked two hours a day, every day (except the three days she was in labor with her three now-adult kids) for over 30 years…and this has taken place in ALASKA! Why can’t I just do it without giving myself a lecture about the pathetic mess of an old lady I will be if I don’t behave myself and exercise daily? Hmmm,,,,,,the word “lazy” does come to mind! more…Pam

86-year old Johanna Quaas Doing Gymnastics

Gymnastics have never been my thing. In high school gymnastics classes, even the thought of the parallel bars, the Pomell horse, the vault and the rings sent me into a tizzy. Lets just say that I was a total klutz. When I saw this video of 86 year old Johanna Quaas doing a floor routine (and, in the second video, a bars routine), I was again filled with the wish to-JUST ONCE- bound across the mats with a perfect 10 aerial. Or, perhaps to receive a 9.5 for my flips, twists and release moves on the parallel bars. Hope springs eternal for the 16 year old within who still yearns to fly!!
